U.S. License Plate Redesigns
To explore my skills in illustration and creating design systems that weren’t specific to branding, I tasked myself with redesigning all 50 United States license plates—or at least one version of each—as well as the 5 territories and the District of Columbia. As their main job is to indicate state, county and registration of vehicles on the road, license plates can often be a bit... spare... and be strictly function-over-form. But as moving billboards for a state, I tasked myself with flipping this relationship to focus on the visuals that can represent a state in a very tightly packed space, and less focus on actual usability, legibility or real-world application. For simplicity sake, I systemized all plates to the six alphanumerical “XXX-XXX” format. The illustration style chosen was inspired by artists like María Ramos, Mario Degrada and Rudolph de Harak among others.
